Slowly but surely, the country was lifting itself out of the Great Depression. Dodge produced over 225,000 vehicles in 1940, marking its eighth consecutive year as one of the top five selling cars in the USA.   But after December 7, 1941, and the attack on Pearl Harbor, the optimism was replaced by total resolve.   Welcome back to the Dodge Heritage Series, a 10-part exploration of Dodge brand history. In this post number two in the series we look into some of the many technical advancements made by Dodge between 1930 and 1939.   By 1930, the operations of the former Dodge Brothers Company were fully integrated into the Chrysler Corporation, with Dodge offering an exciting new lineup of advanced six- and eight-cylinder models.   The old Dodge Brothers label was discontinued on trucks in 1929 and on cars in 1930, replaced by the simpler and more modern Dodge name. Fiat 500X Body Spotted!

Fiat 500X Bare Body

Undisguised images of the new Fiat 500X crossover were tucked inside Fiat’s Five Year Business Plan presentation. The images show Fiat 500X bodies on the assembly line at Fiat’s Melfi factory waiting to be assembled alongside new Jeep Renegades. The Fiat 500X crossover is much larger than the Fiat 500 (approximately 165 inches compared to 139 inches) and uses the chassis of the 5 door Fiat 500L MPV and Jeep Renegade. The all-wheel-drive capable chassis is a widened version of the current one used in Fiat Punto and Alfa Romeo MiTo models. The new Fiat 500X will be available in two-wheel and all-wheel-drive variants.

New Fiat 500X Body

Production of the Fiat 500X is rumored to begin during the third quarter of this year with its debut at the Paris Auto Show in October. European deliveries will follow during the fourth quarter. For the North America market, look for the 500X to debut at the LA Auto Show in November and sales beginning in the first quarter of 2015.

2015 Fiat 500 Abarth Console

The Fiat 500 is a marvel of space utilization. Designers and engineers have squeezed every last drop of interior room out of its 139 inch length, the results are the Fiat 500 can accommodate, at the same time, a driver of the 90 percentile (about 6’1″) and a rear passenger of the 70 percentile (about 5’9″) comfortably.*

2015 Fiat 500 Abarth Console Storage

In the quest to continually improve and enhance the ownership experience, Fiat has redesigned the center console on new 2015 Fiat 500 models. The new center console now houses the USB and Aux connectivity ports, replacing the glove box mounted ports used previously. The console also now features two improved cup holders.

2015 Fiat 500 Console Cup Holders

Originally the NAFTA Fiat 500 console theoretically had three cup holders but these proved impractical to use in real life use. The new cup holders are more secure and with the added connectivity ports along with a new storage shelf, the new console design adds up to making the 500 more practical and user friendly.

2015 Fiat 500 Console USB and Aux Ports

The USB and Aux ports have covers. Note the 12 volt power outlet located on the left side of the console.

Topping off the enhanced center console design is a new USB charging station added to the inside of the glove box. All in all, a subtle but very useful update to the practical Fiat 500.

A new USB charging port located in the glove takes the place of the connectivity ports that have now been moved to the center console .
